Axios, Loudias, Aliakmonas National Park
The rivers of Axios, Loudias, Aliakmonas, Gallikos, the Kalohori and Aliki – Kitrous lagoons and the marsh of Nea Agathoupoli, form the National Park of Axios Delta a magnificent area with unique habitat and high biodiversity, hosting a large number of waders and water birds such as avocets, glossy ibises, herons; many other important species; and a variety of habitats. The most important colony of the rare European ground squirrel lives in the grasslands of the Park, while along the shorelines of the rivers the visitor might meet the European otter, terrapins and colorful insect species like butterflies and dragonflies. Apart from the high ecological value these complex wetlands enrich the surrounding area, forming the second more fertile valley in Greece.
Visit the observation tower at Nea Agathoupoli and admire the panoramic view over aquatic ecosystems of the Nea Agathoupoli, the reed bed and the estuary of the Aliakmonas River.
Walk through the trails and discover the plants and bird species across the riverbanks; look around to see the “Axios” wild horses; and visit the archaeological site of ancient Pydna. During the winter, you will have the chance to see flamingos and many wader species, at the Kitros lagoon and the adjacent salt marsh.
Ride in the grassland or enjoy a long walk, along the sand dunes between the lagoon and the sea and watch the seabirds out on the gulf.
