Delta Nestos, Vistonida and Ismarida Lakes
On the northern coasts of the Thracian Sea between the boundaries of prefectures of Macedonia and Thrace is located one of the most important wetlands in Greece. It includes the Nestos Delta, Vistonida Lake, Lake Ismarida and a dozen of lagoons. This huge protected area is designated as part of the Natura 2000 Network, as Specially Protected Area and also protected by the Ramsar Convention.
In the complex system of lagoons and marshes of Vistonida Lake, flow the fresh water of the rivers Kosynthos and Kompsatos, while the south part of the estuary is brackish due to the inflow of the Thracian Sea. Due to its great ecological value the area turned to be a very popular focal point of ecotourism development.
The most important wildlife reserves are Vistonida Lake, Porto Lagos lagoon and the Nestos Delta as they are home for many species of birds which nest, winter or pass during their emigration. The avifauna includes considerable populations of herons, flamingos, swans, ducks, geese shearwaters, ibises, storks, grebes, cormorants, seagull etc. During winter many bird species find refuge here. The most characteristic creature of Nestos riparian forest is the rare Ring-necked pheasant.
Apart from birds many mammal species live in the Delta, including the deer, the jackal and the otter. There is also an important assemblage of reptiles, such as tortoises, lizards and snakes. In the waters of the wetlands and the rivers nourish many species of fish.
Discover the Kotza Orman riparian forest which is unique in whole Europe and composes an ideal habitat for many species, including the wolf, the fox, the jackal, the hare, the squirrel, and the otter.
The Old Town of Xanthi with the Byzantine Castle, the Old Market, the mansions, the mosque, the Poumakochoria and tobacco warehouses are just some of the attractions near the city.
