Koroneia and Volvi Lakes
The Koroneia and Volvi National Park is located in the Region of Central Macedonia just 25Km from Thessaloniki. It is a rare complex of wetland ecosystems that includes hygrophilous forests, two large lakes (Koronia and Volvi), wet meadows, mudflats, rivers, scrub and farmland. The area has great biodiversity, which includes some important habitats like the lakeside forest of Apollonia being the only region in Greece that hosts mixed colony of gray herons and storks. The area is important for passage and wintering of many bird species, some of them nesting also here. In the two wetlands of Koronia nad Volvi Lakes overwinter on a regular basis more than 20,000 birds.
In the area it is worth visiting the old plane trees of Scholarius filled with herons; the pitch of St. Paul with the plane tree and the Ottoman Baths; the Nymfopetra; the lakeside forest of Madytou at Lake Bolbi for birdwatching; the forest of Apollonia, an area of outstanding natural beauty; the Macedonian Tempi for hiking in nature; the Castle of Rendina and more.
Apart from birdwatching, hiking and horse riding the visitor can take opportunity for rest and relaxation in the two spas situated in the area, the thermal springs of Langkada and Nea Apollonia.
