Tzoumerka National Park
Tzoumerka National Park is located in western Greece between the regions of Trikala, Arta and Ioannina with physical borders the Arachtos River to the west and the river Acheloos in the east.
Tzoumerka is a pristine area with magnificent landscapes, rushing rivers, spectacular waterfalls, lush canyons and traditional stone villages. It is an ideal destination for those who love the wild natural beauty and authentic Greek rural landscapes that has not been affected by tourism development. A perfectly sculpted coexistence of the built with the natural environment with stone bridges, cultural monuments, traditional villages, human artwork, beautiful landscapes, steep mountains, canyons and caves are the elements that give in the area its uniqueness.
The diverse habitats host many rare and protected species of mammals such as otters, brown bears and the wild goat. The presence of Deer (Capreolus capreolus) is an indicator of the variety and diversity of ecosystems found in the National Park of Tzoumerka. The area is particularly important for birds, and hosts hundreds of species of invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles.The butterflies and moths decorate the alpine meadows with their colorful wings and some butterfly species make in the region one of their rare appearances in Greece. In some places the Tzoumerka Nationa Park the visitor might be able to watch the Vulture (Gyps fulvus), seeking its food in the alpine meadows and several mountain bird species. Perhaps we will listen the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) that nests in the region’s coniferous forests.
The National Park of Tzoumerka offers to the visitor great opportunities to admire pristine forests, astonishing landscapes and rare wildlife; walk through the famous stone bridges like “Petra Bridge” that once was the border of Greece; and wander in some of the 70 villages that decorate the slopes of Tzoumerka. During our quest we will come across with old bridges, waterfalls, stone villages built with black stones, renovated old mills, churches, monasteries etc. During our journey we will have the possibility to visit the Cave Anemotripa in Pramanda village; the Museum of Modern Art "Theodoris Papayannis "; the house of the poet K. Kristalis in Syrrako; the church of St. Nicholas in Syrrako with the gold-embroidered epitaph and sculptured temple; the traditional villages of Syrrako Kallarytes, Raftanaioi, Anthousa and Gardiki; the canyons of the rivers Kalarrytikos Arachthos; the impressive waterfalls and the underground river Klifki; the old watermill and the Folklore Museum in Agnanta; the Kipinas Monastery; the Monastery of Vyliza etc.
Apart from hiking and wildlife observation the visitor can enjoy rafting, canoe kayak, mountain biking during the summer time.
