Tzoumerka National Park

Tzoumerka National Park is located in western Greece between the regions of Trikala, Arta and Ioannina with physical borders the Arachtos River to the west and the river Acheloos in the east.

Brief description

Tzoumerka is a pristine area with magnificent landscapes, rushing rivers, spectacular waterfalls, lush canyons and traditional stone villages. It is an ideal destination for those who love the wild natural beauty and authentic Greek rural landscapes that has not been affected by tourism development. A perfectly sculpted coexistence of the built with the natural environment with stone bridges, cultural monuments, traditional villages, human artwork, beautiful landscapes, steep mountains, canyons and caves are the elements that give in the area its uniqueness.

The diverse habitats host many rare and protected species of mammals such as otters, brown bears and the wild goat. The presence of Deer (Capreolus capreolus) is an indicator of the variety and diversity of ecosystems found in the National Park of Tzoumerka. The area is particularly important for birds, and hosts hundreds of species of invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles. The butterflies and moths decorate the alpine meadows with their colorful wings and some butterfly species make in the region one of their rare appearances in Greece. In some places the Tzoumerka Nationa Park the visitor might be able to watch the Vulture (Gyps fulvus), seeking its food in the alpine meadows and several mountain bird species. Perhaps we will listen the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) that nests in the region’s coniferous forests.
